Discover Finland’s Vision for Education 2045

Dear Educator,

We are proud to share “Basic Education 2045: For Life : A Vision for Finnish Comprehensive Schools -report ” The Ministry of Education and Culture developed this new initiative to guide the future of Finnish comprehensive schools.

Rapid shifts in society, from artificial intelligence to ecological changes, mean we must actively guide how our education system evolves. This vision acts as a clear compass. It helps us navigate complex changes and build a system focused on meaningful learning, strong communities, and ecological sustainability.

Here are a few core highlights from the vision:

  • A School for Life: Promoting a meaningful existence, shared community experiences, and life on our planet.
  • Ecological Sustainability: Educating within planetary boundaries and fostering a deep connection with nature.
  • Teacher Empowerment: Supporting rewarding careers and ongoing professional growth for all educators.
  • Wellbeing: The Foundation of Learning:Learning and wellbeing go hand in hand. The vision focuses on creating safe, supportive schools where every student can grow, feel well, and celebrate each other’s success.
  • AI and the Human Touch: AI supports learning, but empathy and human judgment remain central. Technology will help create fairer, more connected schools.
  • Stronger Ties with Families and Communities:Schools work best when partnering with families and communities. These partnerships help support all students and strengthen the school’s educational mission.
Schools also serve as community hubs, bringing people together and offering local activities for all.

Comprehensive schools are key to building our society’s future. Minister of Education Anders Adlercreutz highlights their crucial role:

“The vision highlights the holistic development and growth of children. There is no need to reinvent comprehensive school, but it needs to be updated to meet today’s requirements and challenges. The vision takes a strong stand on the fact that, in the midst of the changed operating environment, there is an increasing demand to reinforce not only basic skills but also our ability to work together. These changes are guided by bildung, hope, agency and our common good.”

Over 5,000 students, educators, and experts helped create this framework. We invite you to explore the full document and see how we plan to shape a better tomorrow.
