A Finnish & Estonian Adventure with the Cincinnati Bearcats
How we brought a teacher training course to life across two top education systems
Hello from Finland and Estonia,
This spring, we had the pleasure of welcoming a wonderful group of education students from the University of Cincinnati. Here is a look back at what we explored together, and how your university could do the same.
A study tour built for future teachers
Working hand in hand with the teachers from the School of Education of the University of Cincinnati, we designed a programme that fitted neatly into their teacher training course. Graduate and undergraduate students travelled to Finland and Estonia for a first-hand experience of two education systems known worldwide for their quality and innovation.
The theme was simple but powerful: an introduction to the key features of the Finnish and Estonian education systems. The goal went beyond reading about success on paper. We wanted students to see daily practice up close.
What the Bearcats experienced
The group spent their days learning alongside Finnish and Estonian educators, asking real questions and reflecting on what they saw. Highlights included:
- School and kindergarten visits across early years, primary and secondary levels
- A visit to a teacher training school to observe student teachers in action
- Expert lectures and open discussions with principals, teachers and former educators
- A close look at student well-being, equity and innovative pedagogy
- Nature-based learning at the Finnish Nature Centre and national park
- A hands-on day at the Heureka Science Centre
- A cross-border visit to Tallinn, with a school visit and Estonian hospitality
- Cultural activities in Helsinki, from libraries and design to historic sites
Throughout the week, we placed real emphasis on reflective pedagogical thinking. Students did more than observe; they considered what these practices could mean for their own future classrooms.
More than education
Finland is often ranked as the happiest country in the world. Helsinki is a Creative City of Design and one of the most liveable cities anywhere. Our guests discovered its history, calming nature and a story you really have to experience to understand.
Thank you, Cincinnati
A warm thank you to the lovely University of Cincinnati group for their energy, curiosity and trust. It was a joy to host you, and we are already preparing to welcome the next groups.
